The Dutchess County Volunteer Firemens Association (DCVFA) is trying to get more women involved in firefighting and is offering scholarships for two Dutchess County young ladies so they can attend the Phoenix Firecamp July 15-20, 2018. The camp, an initiative of the Fire Service Women of New York State (FSWNYS), is open to young women ages 14-19 who among other things are in good physical condition. No prior firefighting experience is necessary.

DCVFA Membership Secretary Vincent Galvin said that his organization offers the scholarships "so maybe one day these young ladies will become firefighters." The camp has an application fee of $300 that will be covered by the scholarship. There are no additional costs except for travel to and from the camp held at the Utica Fire Academy. According to Fire Service Women of New York State, the camp is used to encourage young women to become involved in fire and emergency services, either as a career or volunteer firefighter.

Information about the Phoenix Firecamp that has an application deadline of May 1, 2018 can be found at www.fswnys.org. Questions about the Dutchess County scholarships for the camp can directed to Vincent Galvin of the DCVFA at cpcman79@aol.com
