Putnam K9 Receives Protective Vest Thanks to the Girl Scouts

The streets of Putnam County just got a bit safer for one lucky K9.

In a press release from June 1st, the Putnam County Sheriffs Department announced that K-9 Lex "has received a bullet and stab protective vest." The vest comes as a charitable donation from the non-profit organization Vested Interest in K9s, Inc. 

This special vest was sponsored by Girl Scout Troop 12524 from North Hampton, New Hampshire. The K-9 bullet and stab proof vests run anywhere from $1,744 – $2,283 with a five year warranty. A donation of $950 gets a law enforcement K9 one vest. 

Vested Interested is based out of East Taunton, MA and was created in 2009.

Since it was first created, Vested Interest has provided "over 2,700 protective vests in 50 states, through private and corporate donations, at a cost of over 2.3 million dollars."

The Vested Interest program is open to actively employed law enforcement K9's  who are certified and at least 20 months old. Recent K9 grads and K9's with expired vests are also able to partake in the organization.
