Local police helped save a man who said he was going to shoot himself outside a Hudson Valley hospital.

Just hours after the Town of Poughkeepsie Police Department grabbed a woman from jumping off the Walkway Over The Hudson, the same department stopped a suicidal man with a gun in the parking lot of Mid-Hudson Regional Hospital.

On Wednesday around 4 a.m., Town of Poughkeepsie police responded to reports of a suicidal man at the hospital. Upon arrival, officers found a 40-year-old man sitting in a vehicle in the Emergency Room parking lot.

The man was threatening the use of a handgun to commit suicide, police say.

Members of the Town of Poughkeepsie Police Department’s Crisis Negotiations Unit, along with The Dutchess County Sheriff’s Office Crisis Negotiations Unit, began to talk with the man. After talking with the 40-year-old for around two hours, the man surrendered.

He was immediately taken into custody without incident and safely escorted into the Mid-Hudson Regional Hospital for Mental Health evaluation and treatment.

The Town of Poughkeepsie Police Department was assisted by the Dutchess County Sheriff’s Office, and the Fairview Fire Department.
