Police are hoping for leads as they continue to investigate a fatal four-car crash in Ulster County.

New York State Police at Highland say 48-year-old William W. Johnson III was driving a 2001 Jeep Cherokee south on State Route 9W in the Town of Esopus when he crossed over the center line and hit a tractor trailer traveling in the opposite direction.

Johnson’s vehicle came to rest in the southbound lane and was struck by a third vehicle. A fourth vehicle was damaged by debris from the impacts.

Johnson was pronounced dead at the scene and transported to Kingston Hospital.

Route 9W was closed for several hours for the collision reconstruction investigation.
