A man is accused putting many people’s lives at risk when he drove multiple times in the opposite direction while fleeing police in the Hudson Valley. During the chase the man also allegedly crashed into an ambulance.

On Monday around 6:30 p.m., State Police noticed a white Pontiac Grand Am traveling on Route 17 in the Town of Wallkill that matched the description of a car that was wanted for a burglary in New Jersey.

When troopers tried to pull the car over, the driver fled onto Interstate 84 West, police say.

While on Interstate 84, the driver, 25-year-old Michael A. Masonius of Warrensburg, is accused of crossing the median on several occasions and driving in the opposite direction on the highway, putting many in danger.

During the chase, as Masonius tried to pass an ambulance, he hit the rear of the ambulance and also side-swiped the passenger side, police say.

The chase ended when police were able to push the car into the median of I-84. However, at that point, Masonius allegedly got out of his car and fled on foot.

After a brief foot chase he was arrested. Masonius was charged with reckless endangerment, assault, menacing a police officer, criminal mischief, all felonies, unlawful fleeing a police officer in a motor vehicle, criminal possession of stolen property, reckless driving, obstruction of governmental administration, criminal possession of a controlled substance and reckless endangerment, all misdemeanor’s

Masonius was remanded to Orange County Jail in lieu of $50,000 cash or $150,000 bond.
