A Sullivan County man allegedly fled after officers discovered a firearm during a traffic stop.

On Saturday, March 24, 2018,  at approximately 5:30 p.m. Monticello Police stopped a vehicle after observing a defective brake light.

After stopping the vehicle, officers observed a very strong odor of marijuana emanating from the vehicle. Shamell K Moore, 24, of Monticello, who was a passenger in the vehicle was interviewed by officers and found to be in possessionof six plastic baggies containing marijuana.

Upon further investigation, officers located a jacket in the vehicle, which belonged to Moore, that had a loaded 9 MM handgun inside of it.

Upon locating the forearm, Moore fled from officers on foot. Officers were able to chase Moore down, and deployed a taser to subdue and take Moore into custody.

Moore was also found to be in possession of Alprazolam after his arrest. The illegally possessed handgun was found to loaded with eights rounds of ammunition.

Moore was charged with felony Criminal Possession of a Weapon second-degree, Criminal Possession of a Control Substance,and Resisting Arrest.

Moore was arraigned and remanded to Sullivan County Jail in lieu of $50,000 bail pending future court action.
