Three are accused of driving around Ulster County with a newborn and a large amount of heroin in their car.

On Wednesday evening, Members of the Ulster Regional Gang Enforcement Narcotics Team (URGENT) stopped a vehicle for an alleged traffic infraction in the City of Kingston. It was soon discovered the driver, 32-year-old Akeem Smith of Nassau County, had a number of suspensions on his driver’s license, police say.

A search of the vehicle allegedly yielded approximately 20 grams of loosely packaged heroin. The car’s two passengers, 21-year-old Shaelynn A. Every and Angelo M. Romanelli, 24, both of Kingston, were taken into custody with Smith.

An 18-month old child was in the car with the drugs at the time of the arrest, officials say.

All three were charged with the two-counts of third-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance, conspiracy, felonies, and endangering the welfare of a child, a misdemeanor.

Smith was additionally charged aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle, a misdemeanor, and received a traffic infraction for failing to signal a turn.

All three were arraigned in the Town of Hurley Court and remanded to the Ulster County Jail. Smith without bail. Every and Romanelli in lieu of $10,000 cash bail or $50,000 secured bond.
