A local woman warming up her car was terrified when she was allegedly robbed by a man armed with a foot-long knife.

Just before 7 a.m. on Friday, Monticello police responded to a dispute near basketball courts at the Monticello Housing Authority at Evergreen Drive in the Village of Monticello.

As an arriving officer was checking the complex, there was an additional unrelated report of a male armed with what appeared to be a machete, walking around in the complex.

The officer spotted man, later identified as 23-year-old Michael E. Murray of Brooklyn, in a side parking lot standing next to a car with a door open.

Murray was holding a 38 year-old female at knife point and actively robbing her of money and jewelry, police say.

The woman told police that Murray, who she didn’t know, tried to rob her with a long knife as she was warming up her car. The woman was not injured.

Officials found the knife and say it was it about 12 inches long.

Murray was charged with robbery, criminal possession of a weapon, felonies, and criminal possession of stolen property. He is currently on parole for prior robbery conviction, police say.

Murray was remanded to the Sullivan County Jail without bail pending further court action.
