5 cars were damaged during a high speed chase to catch an Orange County man fleeing police, on 3 tires, all over the Hudson Valley.

Town of Wallkill Police responded to a report for an erratic driver on 95 Crystal Run Road. The arriving officer spotted a 2007 Toyota Corolla swerving around oncoming traffic.

The responding officer activated his emergency lights and attempted to stop the car, but the driver allegedly fled.

Soon one of the Toyota’s tries tore off the vehicle. New York State Police and other members of the Town of Wallkill Police department joined the chase as the suspect traveled on three wheels through the City of Middletown, the Town of Mount Hope, and the City of Port Jervis.

Members of the Orange County Sheriff’s Office, Town of Mount Hope, and City of Port Jervis Police Departments joined the chase as the suspect drove onto Interstate 84.

On I-84 authorities used a spike strip to flatten one of the tires on the suspect’s car. However, the suspect continued to drive, now on two wheels, east on I-84. He was finally stopped on I-84 near mile marker 12 when his car was surrounded by police vehicles.

Brian Downes, 24, of Campbell Hall was charged with 5 counts of reckless endangerment, 3 counts of criminal mischief, reckless driving, and unlawfully fleeing police.

Downes was arraigned in the Town of Wallkill Court and remanded to Orange County Jail. He’s due in court at another time.

3 Town of Wallkill and 2 State Police vehicles were damaged in the chase.
