Correction, 6/8: The original article incorrectly stated that the Dream Act provides free college tuition to immigrants in the country illegally. The Dream Act would allow students in the country illegally who have graduated New York high schools to be eligible for college financial aid. We deeply regret the error.

The New York Assembly has passed the Dream Act, which allows undocumented aliens to be eligible to apply for college financial aid.

The NYC-Controlled Assembly Democrats passed the Dream Act on Monday. The legislation has now been voted on and supported twice during this current legislative term alone by Democratic Assembly members from the Hudson Valley.

Colin J. Schmitt, candidate for the 99th NYS Assembly District said:

We have families struggling to afford a college education for their children. Many men and women in Orange and Rockland Counties, like myself, are saddled with student loan debt that will take years to pay off. Yet our Democratic Assemblymembers are dedicated to taking our tax dollars to give illegal aliens free college tuition. This is exactly why I am running for State Assembly

The proposal faces much opposition from the Republican-led state senate, and the odds of passage remain slim for this year.

Roughly 4,500 who entered the country illegally, graduate from state high schools each year.

How do you feel about this?
