A man who was reported missing from the Hudson Valley Wednesday evening was found dead on Thursday.

Dariusz Maslosz, 49, was reported missing from Putnam County on Wednesday around 10:00 p.m. Family members told the Putnam County Sheriff’s Office that he left his home on his motorcycle and brought his licensed handgun with him.

Relatives were concerned for Maslosz’s well-being and told authorities he lately seemed depressed.

Family members also told officials that Maslosz was an avid fisherman and hunter who often hunted in Putnam County, including the Cranberry Mountain preserve, located off Stage Coach Road in Patterson.

Using that information, police checked and found Maslosz’s parked motorcycle unattended along Stage Coach Road, near a blazed hiking trail leading into the heavily wooded preserve.

A search party with 40 people began. State Police tracking dogs and a helicopter was also used to look for the missing man.

Thursday around 2:30 p.m., a state police dog led members of the search party to a hilltop ledge about 50 yards off a blazed hiking trail in the preserve, where Maslosz’s body was found, dead.

A handgun was recovered from the scene. The Putnam County Coroner’s Office pronounced Maslosz dead at the scene.

A preliminary investigation determined that Maslosz died from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Members of the Patterson Volunteer Fire Department assisted in the removal of the body from the preserve and the body was taken to the morgue at Putnam Hospital Center in Carmel for an autopsy performed
