This past weekend, the Miss America pageant was held in Atlantic City, New Jersey on ABC Television.   Actually, they have changed things a little bit.  First off, they refer to the event as a competition and not a pageant anymore.  The newly revamped competition is called Miss America 2.0.  One of the major changes to the competition, they have dropped the swim suit portion of the show.  They don’t want to judge woman on their outward appearance anymore, according to an interview on Good Morning America and shared by ABC News Radio.

The big question, who won the competition this year?  The big winner brings the tiara back to New York.  Miss New York, Nia Franklin was crowed the new Miss America.  Miss Connecticut, Bridget Oei was the first runner -up.   For the talent portion of the competition, Franklin sang “Quando m’envo” from the opera La Boheme.  Franklin is a Kenan Fellow at Lincoln Center Education in New York and majors in music.

Miss America is a full-time job, once she begins her reign.  Franklin plans to advocate for equal education and the importance of the arts.
