A man servicing time in the Hudson Valley potentially attempted to start an electrical fire at the Ulster County Jail.

On Monday, the Ulster County Sheriff’s Office received a report that an inmate of the Ulster County Jail destroyed property belonging to the jail. Through an investigation conducted by Ulster County Sheriff Detectives it was determined that 35-year-old Peter Proper, of Hurley damaged an electrical wire by inserting it into an electrical outlet.

Authorities say Proper attempted to create a spark by inserting the exposed metal portion of the wire into an electrical outlet creating a hazardous situation within the Ulster County Jail.

Proper was charged with 3rd-degree criminal mischief, a felony, reckless endangerment of property, 2nd-degree criminal nuisance, misdemeanors.

Proper will remain incarcerated at the Ulster County Jail from a previous criminal possession of a controlled substance change. He will be arraigned at City of Kingston Court at a later date.
