If gas prices going up again isn't bad enough, it looks like one of our favorite summer treats could cost a bunch more this summer.

Ice cream prices could shoot up this summer. According to the New York Post, the price of vanilla beans, which are obviously used to make ice cream have shot up to about $400 per pound. That's up from about $40 per pound back in 2011.

What does that mean for us? Most likely high prices on all flavors to make up the difference.

Jennifer Dundas, who sells an organic vanilla flavored ice cream, told the Post that

“It’s a big deal. I got a letter from our vanilla supplier and nearly fell out of my chair, the cost had doubled in two months,”I may have to raise prices. I wouldn’t be surprised if you see ice cream companies raise prices across the board on scoops and pints in grocery stores”.

The reason behind the spike in prices is that the vanilla beans, that are harvested in Madagascar, had a bad harvest. Most years the harvest usually nets about 2,000 tons but this year’s harvest only provided about 1,300 tons.

In case you were wondering, vanilla is the second most expensive spice in the world after saffron.
