You'll want to make sure your car doors are locked tonight.

Halloween is the night where kids dress up in costumes and go door to door gathering treats, but they're not the only ones in search of free stuff. Hudson Valley car thieves are preparing for their big night too, and residents should take precaution to make sure they don't become a victim.

Car and Driver magazine reports that more vehicles are stolen on Halloween than on almost any other holiday. Only second to New Years Day, Halloween seems to be the day preferred by most criminals to grab your wheels.

The reasons why October 31 is such a popular day for car thieves may be obvious. People are usually distracted by trick-or-treaters and don't notice unusual or suspicious activity. Also, dressing in a mask or disguise is pretty easy to do on the one day of the year when everyone else is also in costume.

Statistics from the National Insurance Crime Bureau shows that last year car thieves stole 2297 vehicles on Halloween. The Honda Civic was the most stolen car last year, followed by the Accord. Other cars that are popular with criminals are the Toyota Camry, Toyota Corolla, Nissan Altima, and GMC Sierra.

The most important thing Hudson Valley car owners can do to protect themselves this Halloween is to use some common sense. The NICB reports that many of the cars stolen on Halloween are left unlocked with the keys in the ignition.
