A local supermarket chain that's been desperately in need of some remodeling is transforming itself into a state of the art food store.

With two major Hudson Valley supermarkets merging  and big businesses like Amazon getting into the food store business, local brands are starting to realize that they need to stop up their game. Shoprite is now investing serious money into their Hudson Valley stores, creating a whole new shopping experience for their customers.

Rundown stores in Kingston and Poughkeepsie have been completely redesigned and remodeled. But the changes aren't just cosmetic. New perks for customers include a whole new prepared foods department with an in-store cafe, free health and wellness services from an in-store dietitian, more self-checkout lanes and a bigger emphasis on the "ShopRite from Home" service where customers can shop for groceries from their computer. Larger selections of local and organic produce can also be found at the stores in addition to expanded butcher services and seafood choices.

Construction is almost complete on the improvements being made to the Poughkeepsie store at the South Hills Mall. And on Sunday the Shoprite in Kingston held a ribbon-cutting ceremony and grand opening celebration for their new store.

Brett Wing, president and chief operating officer of ShopRite Supermarkets, talked about the investment being made to their Hudson Valley locations. He remarked that the new renovation will "better meet the needs" of their customers. Wing also thanked shoppers for their patience during the long renovation process. As a part of the celebration, ShopRite also donated $500 to the People’s Place Food Pantry of Ulster County.
