Subway has announced plans to close 500 locations across the U.S. According to MSN, the sandwich chain made the decision based on low sales numbers. Bloomberg reports that Subway closed roughly 800 locations last year. Currently, Subway has a little over 25,000 locations.

According to Bloomberg, Subway is hoping a new loyalty program will help boost business again. More Subway stores will also offer touch-screen ordering kiosks and a sleeker design with remodels.

Besides looks and a new rewards program, Subway is also focusing on expanding their brand globally, to the U.K. China, India, and Latin America, as reported by Bloomberg.
