Days before his wedding, a Hudson Valley police officer was killed by a mail truck.

On Thursday around 4:30 p.m., Town of Kent police responded to a crash on Route 301 near Ninham Road.

Responding officers found a U.S. Postal vehicle diagonal across the road and a man lying on the road.

An investigation determined the motorcycle driver, 29-year-old Gary Pietropaola of Fishkill, was heading east on Route 301 when his bike was hit by a U.S. Postal vehicle that was pulling out of a driveway, police say.

Pietropaola was seriously injured. A helicopter arrived to transfer him to Westchester Medical, but while in route, he went into cardiac arrest.

Pietropaola was then diverted to Putnam Hospital Center where he was pronounced dead.

Pietropaola was a police officer with the Town of Carmel Police Department, according to Town of Kent police. He previously worked with the SUNY New Paltz Police Department. His father is a retired Yonkers police officer.

Pietropaola was supposed to get married next week, according to a GoFundMe started to form the Gary Pietropaolo Memorial Fund.

The cause of the crash is under investigation.
