Another local plant is closing, leaving 105 residents without a job.

It's a trend that's making many Hudson Valley residents nervous. This year several plants and factories in our area have closed, affecting hundreds of local workers. In February 168 people lost their jobs after Fluor and Jabil shuttered their plants at the IBM campus on Route 9.

Now, Avon has announced that they will be closing their Hudson Valley plant and laying off all 105 workers. A recent Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) was made public, announcing that the Avon plant on Midland Avenue in Rye would be closing on September 30.

The reason given for the closing was "economic." According to the WARN notice, none of the employees are union workers. A press release from Avon posted after the closing bell on Wednesday states that the company will be consolidating all of their US business into an existing site in Suffern, NY. The jobs lost from the sale of the Rye location will not be replaced. The 130-year-old beauty product company says the closing is part of their plan to downsize, or "streamline" the company, as the press release states.

Avon's CEO, Jan Zijderveld, says the layoffs are necessary for the company's survival.  "While decisions like these that impact our employees are never easy, we will manage the transition in a respectful and sensitive manner. I wish to thank all of our colleagues for their dedication to our growth plans to turnaround Avon."
