A Hudson Valley man is heading to prison for raping a young girl.

On Friday in Sullivan County Court, 50-year-old Vernon Newhall of Bloomingburg was sentenced to 18 years in prison after he was found guilty for two counts of second-degree rape, third-degree rape, criminal sexual act and endangering the welfare of a child.

During a trial in June, a jury found that between November of 2015 and September of 2016 Newhall had a sexual relationship with a 14-year-old girl.

According to court documents, Newhall engaged in multiple acts of sexual intercourse and oral sexual conduct with the victim.

Newhall was arrested in Nov. 2016 after the girl told a school nurse about the abuse.

"The sexual assault of our children cannot be tolerated," Sullivan County District Attorney Jim Farrell said. "This victim displayed tremendous courage and bravery in coming forward to confront her abuser.”

An order of protection was issued for the victim. Newhall was also ordered to register a sex offender prior to his release from prison.
