A Hudson Valley man who used his truck to run over a man he believed was having an affair with his wife is heading to prison.

In Sullivan County Court, 53-year-old Vernon DeGroat of Lava was sentenced to seven years in state prison and five years of post-release supervision for attempted assault, assault and two counts of driving while intoxicated.

According to the Sullivan County District Attorney’s Office, On June 30, 2015, on School Street in the Hamlet of Narrowsburg, DeGroat intentionally drove his Ford Ranger pick-up truck at another man, ramming him, causing him physical injury. The man's injuries included a broken clavicle and a head injury, that required treatment at Westchester Medical Center.

While striking the victim, DeGroat drove his truck into a house, causing damage to the home.

The assault was a product of jealous rage by DeGroat and his belief that his wife was having an affair with the victim, officials say.

A jury found DeGroat guilty after two hours of deliberations in May of 2016.

DeGroat's driver's license was revoked by the Court and he was ordered to pay approximately $5,000 in restitution for the damage caused to the house.
