An investigation is underway after a Hudson Valley man was found dead inside his home.

On Friday around 3 p.m., Port Jervis City Police Officers responded to an apartment on East Main Street to check on the well-being of resident who hadn’t been seen or heard from in a long time.

Officers forced their way into the apartment and found 57-year-old John Gafycz dead.

An initial investigation on the scene resulted in the determination by officers to seal the area and declare the apartment a potential crime scene, police say.

Based upon the preliminary findings of an autopsy and information gathered by investigators, no signs of trauma or suspicious injuries were found that can be associated with the direct cause or manner of death, according to authorities.

As of this writing, no official cause of death has been determined. Officials are waiting for the results of a toxicology report, which could take over a month, to determine if drugs or alcohol played a role in the death.
