A young mother who's also a new grandmother was killed in a fire in the Hudson Valley that injured 10 others. Many children are among the injured.

On Saturday around 2 a.m., a fire broke out on Russell Street in Saugerties. The blaze destroyed the a three-family apartment.

"The building house three apartments it also affected the neighboring building at the 22 Russel Street and that’s also in the form of building a house houses two apartments," Deputy Fire Coordinator of Ulster County Emergency Management Chris Worrad told NEWS10 ABC.

First responders arrived at the home to the home fully engulfed in flames and were told one person was trapped inside. The fire was too fierce to save the trapped person, later identified as Tanya Conklin, 46, of Saugerties.

"When somebody says there's somebody in the building, and when there's fire showing from every single window, the chances of surviving that are very slim,” Worrad told CBS 6. "It’s a hard thing for the fire service to take and do, to know that there's a certain time when they gotta go to a defensive operation."

The fire started in the first apartment building, which was occupied by 37-year-old Nawabzada A. Kahn, his wife, Monna Khan and their three children, ages 10, 9 and 3.

Kahn, his wife, and their 10-year-old son were admitted to the Westchester Medical Center with extensive burns and are in critical but stable condition, police say.

The second apartment was occupied by Conklin, 22-year-old Brittany Conklin, 21-year-old Malikye Stokes, 17-year-old Samantha Widener, 9-year-old Desiree Widener and 17-year-old Amber Engwiller of Mount Marion.

Engwiller sustained burns and injuries from jumping out of a second story window. She is at Westchester Medical Center listed in critical but stable condition.

Witnesses told News 10 that Conklin was a grandmother.

"It's very sad that this had to happen to such a young girl, and a young mother, a young grandmother," Bonnie North told News 10.

The cause of the blaze is still under investigation.
