Emergency officials made a daring rescue Monday after a man fell while hiking and was clinging to a tree nearly 150 feet above the ground, near the Hudson River, for many hours.

Officials in Rockland County say he apparently lost his footing yesterday while hiking a trail on Hook Mountain in Nyack. The man then fell over the ledge, and became wedged in a tree.

According to LoHud, the man fell around 12:30 p.m. and traveled about 400 yards before getting stuck in a tree. While clinging to the tree he used a cellphone to call 911. He held on for more than 3 hours as Nyack volunteer firefighters located the man through GPS coordinates and then figured out how to get him down safely.

Emergency crews took several hours to perform a vertical rescue. Firefighters than carried him down the mountain around 4 p.m.

The  man’s name or hometown have not yet been released. He suffered leg and hip injuries, but they were not considered life-threatening.
