Grant Aims to Reduce Underage Drinking on College Campuses

Governor Andrew Cuomo announced this week that $2.5 million dollars in grant funding will be allocated for 20 SUNY and CUNY schools for the purpose of creating and establishing programs to help strengthen underage drinking and substance abuse prevention efforts. The goal is to not only make college campuses safer but also communities around them.

“Time after time, we have seen the reckless behavior, and bad decisions with often life-altering consequences that come with underage drinking,” Governor Cuomo said. “This funding will build on our progress to prevent senseless tragedies and equip students with vital knowledge to curb underage and binge drinking, and provide critical services to those at risk for addiction.”

The grants will be be administered through  New York State Office of Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Services. CUNY and SUNY school can apply for the grant funding through December 13th. Each college selected will be awarded $125,000 annually for 5 years. Winners of the awards are estimated to be announced by February 22nd.
