Shots rang out in the City of Newburgh Friday night, leaving an 11-year-old girl with a bullet wound to her hip.

An unknown shooter fired a gun several times from Liberty Street up Benkard Avenue at 10:30PM, the City of Newburgh Police Department said in a press release issued Saturday morning.

The 11-year-old was struck once while exiting a taxi cab on Benkard Avenue. The girl's injuries were not life-threatening, authorities said. No other injuries were reported.

"If anyone witnessed this incident I urge them to speak with us," City of Newburgh Chief of Police Daniel Cameron said in the press release. "We cannot tolerate this violence in our community. Having information and not reporting it is a form of accepting this violence."

Detectives are investigating the shooting. Police said anyone with information about the incident should call 845-561-3131.
