One person is dead following an early Monday morning crash on Interstate 84.

On Monday at around 2AM, New York State Police from East Fishkill responded to a one-car motor vehicle accident on Interstate 84 near the border of Dutchess and Putnam counties.

An investigation revealed that a car driving east exited the highway on the northern shoulder, near mile post maker 61.2. The car traveled about 60 feet and struck a rock cut and a tree before coming to a complete stop.

Due to the impact of the crash, the car caught fire, police say. The driver of the vehicle, a 58-year-old man from East Longmeadow, Mass., was pronounced dead at the scene. Police are not releasing the man's name at this time.

Authorities are not sure why the man’s car drove off the highway. The cause of the crash is still under investigation.

Also responding to the crash site were Lake Carmel Fire Department, EMStar, and the Putnam County Coroner Dr. Daniel Stephens.
