About Mac: Mac (MacAlister) was a rambunctious and lovable little boy from Red Hook, NY who, at 16 months of age, was diagnosed with Neuroblastoma, an aggressive form of childhood cancer. His mommies noticed that he was having sleepless nights, had become more irritable and sedentary, developed two black eyes, and eventually stopped walking. When the cancer was finally diagnosed, after many visits to doctors and emergency rooms, it had already spread from his adrenal gland into his bones from his skull to his knees. Mac was immediately rushed to Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center where he underwent surgery, radiation, fourteen cycles of chemo, and clinical trials. Mac’s cancer progressed despite the aggressive treatments.
When Mac was well enough to come home he spent precious time in his Hudson Valley home with his twin brother, Ailyn. They ran, climbed, danced, read books and laughed. Mac died on March 31, 2014 at only 2 years old–too soon, too young. Mac is not alone; every 16 hours a child dies from Neuroblastoma. Mac’s family and community are organizing this run to raise money for Neuroblastoma research so that other families do not have to face the tragedy Mac’s family faced.
