A municipal bookkeeper from Dutchess County is accused of stealing funds from the town she worked for and using them to pay for college loans.

On Thursday, the New York State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation from Poughkeepsie charged 52-year-old Laura M. Hurley of Millbrook with fourth-degree grand larceny, a class E felony, and official misconduct, a misdemeanor.

In January of 2016, a Town of Washington official alleged that Hurley had stolen over $1,700 in town funds to pay a family member’s college loans. Police say their investigation determined that Hurley, while employed as the Town of Washington bookkeeper, stole town funds between March of 2014 and July of 2015.

On Thursday, the Town of Pleasant Valley Justice Court signed a warrant ordering Hurley’s arrest. She was arraigned in the Town of Pleasant Valley Court and released on her own recognizance. She is scheduled to appear in the Town of Pleasant Valley Court on Oct. 20.
