FISHKILL - Dr. Leonard H. Hammer, D.D.S., a local area resident since 1958 and formerly of New York City, died suddenly at home on Tuesday, March 21, 2017. He was 84.
Son of the late Max and Rebecca (Frankel) Hammer, he was born in Manhattan on May 26, 1932.
Leonard was a U.S. Army Veteran and served in the Medical Corps. He was honorably discharged from service as a Captain.
Upon moving to the local area, he opened a dental practice in Fishkill. Dr. Hammer dedicated nearly 30 years to his profession, and retired in 1985.
He reveled in many hobbies such as woodworking and automotive repairs. He also enjoyed playing tennis, and organized a local league with several friends and acquaintances.
On June 23, 1963, he married Erna Nisse in Queens. Erna survives at home in Fishkill.
Leonard is also survived by his daughter, Jill Hammer & her wife Shoshana Jedwab of Manhattan; his son, Marcus Hammer of Florida; his granddaughter, Raya Jedwab-Hammer; and his brother, Allan Hammer & his wife Kathy of West Virginia; as well as many other relatives & friends.
A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, March 24th at King David Memorial Gardens, 101 Mill Street, Putnam Valley.
