Dr. James Stuart Fishler, an Area Resident, Dies at 93

Dr. James Stuart Fishler died at the age of 93 on September 26, 2017 at the Lutheran Care Center in Poughkeepsie, NY. He had been a long time resident and practiced as a Pediatrician on Reade Place for over 30 years. Dr. Fishler was also employed by Vassar Brothers Hospital Center as VP of Medical Affairs until he retired in 1992.
Dr. Fishler was active in many community positions in Poughkeepsie including the Children's Home, the Mid-Hudson Library System, the Hudson Valley Philharmonic, the Poughkeepsie Tennis Club and Taconic Developmental Center.
Dr. Fishler, originally from Upper Montclair, NJ, attended Amherst College and Cornell University before graduating from Tufts Medical College in 1948. He served as a Captain in the combined service of the Army Air Force during his college years and following WWII he served at Mitchell Air Force Base in Long Island, NY.
He was pre-deceased by his wife of 54 years, Joan Schaefer Fishler on August 28, 2017. Dr. Fishler is survived by his son George Owen Fishler, 51 of Poughkeepsie, NY and by four children from a previous marriage (Lois Ramsey Fishler); James Stuart Fishler, Jr., 66 of Pacific Palisades, CA, Franklin Fishler, 65 of Honolulu, HI, Priscilla Fishler, 63 of Nyack, NY, Douglas Fishler, 60 of Thousand Oaks, CA; and by nine grandchildren, Justin, Brian Tia, Clair, Peter, Katie, Charlotte, Matthew, James; great grandchild, Claire; daughters-in-law, Lisa Prince Fishler, Claudia Fishler and son-in-law Michael Sperling.
There will be a memorial service at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to the Alzheimer's Association, Hudson Valley Chapter, 2 Jefferson Street Plaza, Suite 103, Poughkeepsie, NY 12601.
