New York State Police are investigating a fatal accident that occurred Friday morning in the Village of Kiryas Joel in Orange County.

At approximately 11:15 a.m., a school bus was traveling east on Acres Road at the intersection of Lemburg Road in the Village of Kiryas Joel.

The bus stopped to let several children off. A 6-year-old girl, of Brooklyn, NY, exited the bus and proceeded to a south sidewalk. Police said she abruptly changed directions and began to cross the street in front of the bus.

The bus driver did not see her change directions and she was subsequently struck by the front bumper.

She was pronounced dead at the scene.

The New York State Police BCI, Commercial Vehicle Unit and Accident Reconstruction Unit are investigating.

The investigation is ongoing.
