Because this weekend could bring the most miserable weather of the summer, New York State Parks are extending swimming hours. Here’s everything you need to know.

If forecasters are correct, the heat index will be over 100 this weekend and may reach 107 degrees Friday. To fight the heat, Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced that he has directed the State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation to offer extended hours at state swimming facilities and other state parks.

“With temperatures expected to reach 100 degrees this week, we must take every precaution to ensure the safety of New Yorkers,” Cuomo said in a press release. “I have directed New York’s parks to extend their hours at state swimming facilities to provide more New Yorkers with a respite from the oppressive heat surge. I urge all New Yorkers to take necessary steps to limit heat exposure and stay safe during these extremely hot summer days.”

The swimming pool at FDR State Park will remain open until 6:30 PM on Thursday and Friday and 7:30 PM on Saturday and Sunday. Ore Pit Pond at Taconic State Park - Copake Falls Area is open until 7 PM.

This marks the second time this summer state parks have extended swim hours at their facilities.

Swimming may be affected by hazardous weather or changing water conditions. Please check State Parks’ website, www.nysparks.com, or call the park directly, to confirm availability.

Excessive heat is the leading cause of preventable, weather-related deaths each year, particularly among the elderly. Heat causes more than 650 preventable deaths in the United States each year, according to the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. In most years, excessive heat causes more deaths than floods, lightning, tornadoes, and hurricanes combined.
