Antonella’s Settles Racial Discrimination Lawsuit for $50K
After being accused of using racial slurs and treating their Hispanic employees unfairly, Antonella’s is paying up.
Antonella’s, with locations in Wappingers Falls and Fishkill, was accused of illegally treating their Hispanic employees, citing incidents that date back as far as 1995 when the restaurant first opened. According to the lawsuit, co-owner, Angelo Dellicarpini engaged in name-calling, racial slurs, and insisted that employees only speak in English even though it was unnecessary for their duties. The Hispanic employees also claim that they were treated unfairly when it came to using sick days and taking leave from work.
The practices were in direct violation of the Civil Rights Act, and as a result the EEOC attempted to reach a settlement with Antonella’s on behalf of their workers. Eventually, the EEOC filed a lawsuit in U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York.
The U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission announced this week that the local chain of pizzeria restaurants has agreed to pay $50,000 to settle their discrimination lawsuit. In addition, Antonella’s will need to provide “extensive safeguards” and anti-discrimination policies to make sure employees are protected unfair treatment.
