A Fourth of July celebration nearly became deadly when lightning struck near a boat full of people in the Hudson Valley.

On Wednesday around 3:15 p.m., the Mahopac Fire Department responded to multiple calls after a powerful and fast-moving storm hit the area.

First responders were sent to the Mahopac Marina for reports of people struck by lightning while on a boat in Lake Mahopac.

Following an investigation, it was determined lighting didn't strike the boat but did hit the lake very close to the 20-foot boat, causing the boat to lose power, officials say.

Four people and the boat were escorted back to shore by Putnam County Sheriff's Department Marine Unit.

All four were evaluated at the scene. Two refused more medical treatment and two were transported to a local hospital for further evaluation, according to the Mahopac Fire Department.
