A local area is in mourning as a 20-year-old with a bright future was killed in a New Year’s Day crash.

On Sunday around 3 p.m., emergency responders in Yorktown Heights responded to Route 132 for a motor vehicle accident involving a motorcycle.

The driver of the motorcycle, 20-year-old Erik Godinho of Putnam Valley, was taken to Westchester Medical center with severe trauma. He was pronounced dead shortly after.

Godinho attended Putnam Valley High School and played on the football team. Former teachers remember him fondly.

“Erik will always be remembered as the young man with the big contagious smile who went out of his way to always assist others,” Putnam Valley Supervisor Sam Oliverio wrote on Facebook. “He was one of my favorite students at PV High.”

Services will be the Nardone Funeral Home on Washington Street in Peekskill on Wednesday and Thursday from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m., both days. A funeral mass is scheduled for Friday at 12:30 p.m. at St. Columbanus Church in Cortlandt Manor.
The cause of the crash is still under investigation.
